Metal Buildings
Metal Buildings, built by our own crew
Most people who want a metal building are after the same things: plenty of covered space, a clean look, and siding and roofing that never need painting like wood. Steel delivers that, but in Minnesota the details decide how well it holds up. A cold steel roof drips condensation onto whatever is stored below if nothing keeps warm, moist air away from it. Snow slides off in sheets and buries any door under the eave. And a building set on a wet clay pad that was never compacted settles until the doors stop closing right.
As metal building contractors based in Cannon Falls, we build steel-sided shops, garages, storage buildings and barns in every town within 100 miles, from the Twin Cities to Rochester, Mankato and Winona, plus western Wisconsin and northern Iowa. Our metal buildings are post-frame underneath: wood posts set below the frost line, engineered trusses, and steel roof and wall panels in the colors you choose. We are licensed and do our own excavating, so the same crew clears and grades the site, builds the pad, frames the building, hangs the doors and pours the floor.

What's included
What goes into our metal buildings
- 01
Metal shops and storage buildings
Steel-sided shops, garages, equipment buildings and barns, cold or heated, sized around what you will park, store or work on inside.
- 02
Steel roofing and siding in your colors
Steel roof and wall panels fastened over the frame, with wall, roof and trim colors picked to match your house, farm or business.
- 03
Wainscot, trim and overhangs
A contrasting steel wainscot along the base of the walls, colored corner and eave trim, and roof overhangs that keep rain and melt off the walls. A dented wainscot panel can be replaced without redoing the whole wall.
- 04
Insulation, liner and condensation control
Insulation with vapor control, or condensation-control roof panels on cold buildings, so the steel roof does not drip. Walls and ceilings can be finished in white steel liner or wood liner.
- 05
Doors and windows placed for snow
Overhead, sliding and walk doors plus windows, laid out so snow sliding off the steel roof does not pile up in front of the doors you use most.
- 06
Pad, posts and concrete floor
We build the pad, set the posts below the frost line and pour the concrete floor, so the ground and the building come from one crew.

Metal Buildings: what they can look like
How it works
How a metal building job works
- 1
Free quote and site visit
Tell us what the building is for, the size you have in mind and where it goes. We walk the site, look at access and drainage, and give you a free quote.
- 2
Layout, colors and permits
We place the doors, windows and overhangs around how you will use the building, settle the roof, wall, wainscot and trim colors, and take care of the county or township permit.
- 3
Site work and framing
Our crew grades and compacts the pad, sets the posts below the frost line and raises the trusses, with a crane when the spans call for one.
- 4
Steel, doors and finish
We fasten the roof and wall panels and trim, hang the doors and windows, add insulation and liner, pour the floor and grade the yard so water runs away.

Questions
Metal Buildings FAQs
Is a metal building the same as a steel building?
Not exactly. A steel building usually means a pre-engineered building with a steel frame as well as a steel skin, while a metal building is any building finished in steel roofing and siding. The metal buildings we build are post-frame underneath, with wood posts, girts and engineered trusses carrying the steel. That frame takes insulation and liner easily and suits shops, garages, storage and farm buildings.
How much does a metal building cost?
It depends on the building, so we quote each one for free. Size and wall height drive most of the cost, followed by the number and size of doors, insulation and liner, a concrete floor, and whether the building will be heated. Site work matters too: a pad on high, dry ground takes less work than one on low clay that needs fill and drainage. Tell us what you want to store or do inside and we will price it from there.
Will a steel roof drip condensation in a Minnesota winter?
It can if nothing stops it. When warm, moist air inside reaches a cold steel roof, it condenses and drips onto equipment, hay and tools. We stop it with insulation and a vapor barrier on heated buildings and condensation-control roof panels on cold storage, plus ventilation at the eaves and ridge. On the outside, the trusses are engineered for the snow load where the building sits, and doors are placed so roof snow does not bury them.
Do I need a permit for a metal building?
Almost always. Most Minnesota counties, townships and cities require a building or zoning permit for a new building, with setbacks from property lines and roads and size or height limits on residential lots. Near lakes and rivers, shoreland rules add more setbacks, and buildings used only for farming can be treated differently. Wisconsin and Iowa set their own rules, and we check what your county and township require before we build.
Can you match a metal building to my house or farm?
Yes. Steel roofing and siding come in a wide range of colors, and the trim, wainscot and doors can contrast or match. We can follow the roof pitch and overhangs of your house, add windows and a covered porch, or build the classic red building with white trim that fits most farmsteads.
